Gunite is a specialized blend of concrete consisting of water, sand, and cement. It is distributed utilizing a unique spray gun where water is added to the dry mix of cement and sand at the end of the gun-shaped nozzle opening. As the mixture shoots out, the gunite is formed in the air before hitting the steel bar frame of the swimming pool. It is considered a "dry mix" because water is added to form the concrete onsite rather than prematurely. Ultimately, gunite is known for its strength and durability.
Shotcrete is a blend of water, sand, and cement. It is also sprayed out of a nozzle to form a pool. Shotcrete is considered a "wet mix" because it is mixed before arrival at the job site. Additionally, it is ample for shotcrete to be applied quickly. To avoid hardening while they work, some contractors will add water to the mixture in the cement truck. This can lessen the strength of the mixture.
When applying gunite, you have the flexibility to stop and start again. This allows for on-site customizations if needed, such as step modifications. Additionally, gunite is known to be more durable than shotcrete because it dries faster, leading to a much smoother surface. When comparing the two, gunite tends to be more cost-efficient, of better quality, and more durable.
